Getting Stronger After Amputation: How Exercise Physiologists Help

Losing a limb is challenging, but with the right support, you can regain strength, confidence, and independence. Exercise physiologists are experts who create exercise programs tailored just for you to help your body recover and get moving again.

What Happens During Assessment?
First, the exercise physiologist will check your overall fitness by looking at things like your strength, balance, flexibility, and heart health. They might test how well you can walk or use your prosthetic, see how your muscles are working, and ask about any pain or challenges you’re facing.

What Does Therapy Look Like?
Based on your assessment, they’ll design a therapy plan that could include:

  • Strength exercises to build up muscles around your remaining limb and core, like leg lifts or resistance band workouts.

  • Balance and coordination activities, such as standing on one leg or using balance boards, to help prevent falls.

  • Cardiovascular workouts, like walking, cycling, or swimming, to improve heart health and stamina.

  • Functional movements that practice everyday activities, such as getting up from a chair or climbing stairs, often adapted to work with your prosthetic.

Throughout therapy, the exercise physiologist will support you, adjust exercises as you improve, and help you stay motivated. Their goal is to make sure you feel stronger, more confident, and ready to live life to the fullest.

Frequently Asked Questions!

How can an Exercise Physiologist help me after an amputation?
  • Prosthetic Mastery: We build the specific core, hip, and stump strength required to walk efficiently with your prosthesis.
  • Asymmetry Correction: We design movements to balance your body, protecting your intact limb and lower back from overuse injuries.
  • Pain Management: Targeted exercise can significantly reduce phantom limb pain and residual limb hypersensitivity.
  • Cardiovascular Fitness: Amputation increases the energy required to move; we help you build the stamina needed for daily life.

I don’t have my prosthesis yet. Can I still start exercise rehabilitation?
  • Absolutely. Pre-prosthetic training is highly recommended.
  • We focus on stump shaping exercises, joint mobility, preventing contractures, and upper-body transfers.
  • Preparing your body early makes transitioning to your prosthesis much smoother and faster.

How do you coordinate with my prosthetist and rehab team?
  • We collaborate directly. We communicate with your prosthetist, rehab consultant, and other members of your health and rehab team.
  • We ensure your exercise program aligns perfectly with your componentry adjustments and overall clinical goals.
